What is the right way to wish for something?
What is the right way to wish for something?
There is an old trite saying – be careful what you wish for, lest it come true. I don't think this saying rings true. We should not be afraid of our wishes that come true, but of the goals that are imprecise and roughly formulated.
Each fulfilled wish entails a sequence of conditions and consequences that we could not have foreseen. For instance, if a girl wishes upon the most beautiful guy at her college or simply a rich man, she does not always realize how many "side effects" will come if her wish comes true. Is she ready to change her circle of friends and way of life, to bear with the quirks and authoritarian style of her rich husband or the many women that surround her beautiful fiancé? Or another frequent example – a desperate, though inaccurately formulated desire for a highly paid job or managerial position can result in unforeseen long-term business trips, being absent on the weekends, constant fighting with loved ones or not having enough time for relatives.
Fulfilment of an ill-specified desire brings so many "buts" into our life that the desired object becomes less appealing.
When wishing for something we need to have a clear understanding of our motives – why do we need a specific situation, a specific type of man or a successful move to a foreign country. Having identified the reason and the aim of our wish, we need to do a careful, very careful! analysis of the compromises we are willing to take to fulfill our wish, of the changes we are ready to accept and the things we are ready to sacrifice.
Back in 2008, one of my clients travelled to Prague and literally fell in love with the city. As a go-getter, she started looking for work opportunities to go back there again and again, she regularly spent her weekends in the city, enthusiastically exploring every tiny bit of it. Finally, she plucked up the courage for a desperate move – to invite her boyfriend to Prague for a stroll in October, when the city beams with beauty and romance. It should be noted that their relationship was dragging on painfully and neither one of them was ready to take the first step and at least go for a kiss. Before the trip Iryna, eaten up by the adventure and anticipation, showed up for a consultation – there it is, finally... we will stay in one hotel room so there will be no excuses. Star, Major Arcana card signifying hope and long desired aim (and in some cases, a homosexual relationship) in combination with a Three of Swords (literally meaning a broken heart) and High Priestess representing Iryna herself, pointed otherwise. During the 4 days and 3 nights in Prague they thoroughly explored all the local landmarks, including Strahov Monastery libraries, paid a late night visit to Golden Lane (at night you can get there without paying the 10-euro entrance fee per person), and the alchemy museum. However, the alchemy of a long-lasting romantic relationship was irreversibly broken. Neither of the pair managed to make the first move, despite having lots of mulled wine and enjoying the wonderful romantic views of Vltava. The image of Iryna as a beautiful but unattainable Priestess and a spiritual creature in general was too strong, and that, actually, caused the very creature to suffer heartbreak. However, when it came to business, namely real estate, everything was great for Iryna – the Upright Wheel of Fortune perfectly suited her plans of buying a small, yet cozy studio in Mala Strana and set up a rent business in one of the most popular cities of Europe.
It is true That tarot cannot prevent us from making decisions, nevertheless it helps us see the pitfalls not immediately apparent, think in advance about the consequences of making our wish come true, about the changes of social roles and the scope of compromise needed to achieve the end goal.
Having looked at the wish from different perspectives, my friends and clients often understand why they really wanted for that wish to come true. Only a small percent of those very keen, who really "need this", go to the end. And this where the most interesting part begins – we can forever look at fire, water and a person working on themselves, driven by the burning desire to achieve their goal.
